The Risks of Contact Lenses
Beverly Hills, Westlake Village, and surrounding areas of Los Angeles, California
Contact lenses are one of the most popular ways of correcting vision without glasses. However, despite their immense popularity, contact lenses do come with several risks and drawbacks that patients should be aware of – especially if you rely on your contacts from dawn until dusk.
If you are interested in learning more about your refractive surgery options for vision correction, call us today at (888) 339-8143 to schedule a free LASIK screening with our experienced Los Angeles eye surgeon Dr. Rajesh Khanna.
Eye Irritation and Infection
If you wear contact lenses, it’s important to routinely clean them according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and make sure you do not wear them longer than the specified amount of time. Otherwise, your eyes are at risk of irritation or infection.
Some of the most common symptoms of eye irritation include:
- A gritty or itchy feeling in the eye
- Excess tearing
- Increased light sensitivity
- Blurry vision
If any of these symptoms occur while you are wearing contact lenses, remove them immediately. If the symptoms persist, contact your eye doctor. Do not throw away the contact lenses; Dr. Khanna may use them to determine what caused your condition.
Other Problems Caused by Contact Lenses
Apart from infection and irritation, some of the other problems caused by improper contact lens use can include:
- Corneal abrasions – Scratches on the surface of your eye.
- Corneal ulcers – Sores on the outer layer of your cornea (usually caused by untreated infections).
- Corneal thinning – Wearing contacts all day can prevent your cornea from getting the oxygen it needs to produce the right amount of new cells. As a result, your cornea can decrease in thickness over time.
With careful use and supervision by an experienced ophthalmologist, contact lenses can be a valuable option for correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. However, many of our patients want to not only avoid the risks that come with excessive contact lens use, but also be completely free from reliance on eyewear of any kind.
