Who Are Baby Boomers?
A generation term meant to specify a post-World War II generation is “Baby Boomer”. The US Census classifies this group as being born between 1946-1966. This baby boomer generation is now considered forty-six year old or older and they have enjoyed the fruits of an economic boom not seen formerly. These “baby boomers” have lead the revolution for technological advances we see today. Businesses and schools were created to fill their unique needs whether it was diapers, televisions, or computers. Many studies have predicted that these baby boomers will far outlast earlier generations. Some even say that baby boomers will live even longer than Generation X (those born between 1966-1976). This is mainly due to a amount of contributing elements including the impression that baby boomers pay extreme care to their health. Progressions in the field of vision, glasses, contact lenses, and then LASIK were impelled by the needs of this generation.
Today, individuals above 46 years of age live in a more complex society where the need for precise vision is more important than ever before. Many have worked hard, explored the world, or maybe saved enough to write the great American novel. For the many activities this generation takes on they desire to be free from visual aids. Most are learning to master new technology such as iPads or iPhones and they want to be able to use them without the disturbance of glasses. This generation has shown a desire for versatile vision. The way we physically see the world impacts our thought process and our well-being. From the very instant we look for the alarm clock to the time we withdraw at night, we depend on our vision. Reading magazines, watching television, cooking, sewing, or solving crossword puzzles and other activities at home require good vision. People who drive require distance vision for reading at traffic signs, intermediate vision for the control panel of the car, and near vision to read driving instructions.
Photo Demonstrating different needs for vision: near for reading, intermediate for computer work, and far to distinguish trees.
At work baby boomers need intermediate vision for computers or iPads and near vision for reading documents. New devices such as the Blackberry and iPhones bring out the value of intermediate vision. For the sports-minded, vision is also critical. Binocular vision with depth perception is a necessity for football, baseball, or tennis. Hiking, swimming, and biking benefit from eyes that can see well without glasses or contacts. For the adventurous that sky dive, parasail, or rock climb mountains clear vision is of utmost importance. Also meticulous eye coordinated activities such as knitting, sewing, needlepoint, analyzing jewelry or machine operation involve superior binocular near vision.
Presbyopia is the inability of the aging, thick, resistant lens of the eye to change shape and focus power. The lens is that part of the eye that brings the light to focus. It is included in the membrane called the lens capsule. On the innermost surface of the lens capsule there are specialistic cells. These cells create new fibers throughout life similar to how our hair grows on our scalp. Unlike hair which can be trimmed or cut, there is no way to remove the old fibers. So in turn, the lens of the eye becomes fatter and less pliable. At the same time, muscles involved in the movement of the lens become weaker and have less space to function because of the thicker lens.
Figure 2 In presbyopia the eye is unable to focus on near objects.
Presbyopia usually begins around the age of forty. Over the years, there is an accrued difficulty in reading small print ,reading the time on clocks, operating computers, or using a cell phones. Presbyopia accelerates progressively over the next twenty years. Weakened intermediate vision makes watching television and using computers extremely difficult.
Why does presbyopia occur?
Evolutionary biologists believe that human beings were designed to live till around 40 to 45 years of age. This coincides with why our near vision suffers and why everyone undergoes various physiological changes such as menopause in women. Today, human innovation and mankinds intellect have allowed human beings to exceed this barrier. The Pi-in-eye vision procedure is another modern medicine method designed to outlast our termination date. In primal cultural civilizations, most people endured as hunters or farmers. People with poor vision did not fare well against wild animals. Consequently, hunters with poor vision were not able to survive. While farmers on the other hand did not need great vision and could proceed working until they were nearly blind. Shadowing the industrial revolution, modern city-based society developed and the need for vision became of import. Hence there was revived interest in the direction of vision disorders. Different methods evolved, integrated and diversified which gave way to brand-new techniques. This intriguing and challenging time period of exploits and inventions is still the basis of modern Cataract, Lasik, Prelex and Pi in eye surgeries.
Non Surgical Presbyopia Treatment of Aging Eyes
Can muscle exercise strengthen the muscles and preserve reading?
For a long time scientists have looked into presbyopia treatment by strengthening eye muscles with various exercises. Opinions have scoped from the use of candles to computers. Eye surgeons and inventors even contrived surgeries to lengthen and strengthen the muscles involved in changing the shape of the lens of the eye. As you might have perceived, none endured the test of time. There is no damage in trying some muscle exercises, however, excessive exercise can lead to eye pain and headaches.
Maybe Vitamins can help?
If vitamins could fix vision, then someone would go to the drug shop to pick out the best eye vitamins instead of than the most suitable readers. Billions of dollars have been used to hopefully uncover medications that prevents cataracts and presbyopia, but to no avail.
Nutrition for the eye.
Nutrition for the cells in the eye, especially the retina and cornea, are perpetually being replenished. The eye cells need vitamin A for the regeneration of cells. Foods loaded in vitamin A are great for eye health. The best source of vitamin A can be found in foods like liver, eggs, or milk. Beta carotene, which is a precursor of vitamin A, is plentiful in fruits yellow in color such as sweet potatoes, butternut squash, carrots, as well as in green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale.
Things to avoid.
Things to deflect from are rubbing of the eyes. The desire to rub is a mark of dryness or allergies which should be appropriately treated. An individual should also avoid excessive eye drops. Most eye drops contain preservatives which in excessive quantities can induce harm over time.
If the eyes are irritated one may wash the eyes with water morning and night. The water should be filtered or boiled and cooled. Rose water created by soaking washed rose petals overnight in water and then removing the petals, is particularly soothing.
Readers or Glasses
For the last two to three hundred years they have been the mainstay of helping us see better. Benjamin Franklin and his glasses are legendary. As famous as his tire experiment in the storm. you get the readers from a dime store. Or as they are called today – The dollar stores. You get fancy glasses from an optical store
Monovision Contact Lenses
The good old seventies. Amongst other things this era also delivers this way of fighting aging eyes. One eyes is fitted for a contact lens for distance and the other with a contact lens for near. The drawback -intermediate vision suffers and loss of binocularity, Great for seventies and even eighties. Today with our dependency on computers and smart phones and need to see the dashboard on cars, this form of treatment is a handicap.
Presbyopia Treatment by Surgery
That brings us to the twenty first century and the newest treatment options for presbyopia. The renewed interest has been sparked by Baby Boomers . A lot of research of innovative science fictional technologies is taking place. Many clinical trials are under progress. FDA is safeguarding us by allowing safe technologies that deliver to be offered to the public.
Lasik Eye Surgery
The concept of mono vision contact lenses has been adapted to lasik eye surgery correction for presbyopia. One eye is set for distance and the other for near vision.

A non FDA approved technology is PresbyLasik. In this method of reversing the ravages of time the cornea is imported multifocality. That is the cornea focuses some light for distance and some for near. This principle is similar to multifocal lenses.
Each eye is therefore able to see the world at all distances. The quality of vision i snot very good. There are issues with dryness and glare. Cataract development can further compromise the quality of vision.
