Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty

Glaucoma is a disease where the pressure in the eye is too much for the optic nerve to bear. This can lead to damage to nerve fibers leading to loss of field of vision and in advanced stages to loss of vision.
To lower the pressure in the eye either the production of tears needs to be decreased or the outflow needs to be increased. One of the strategies to help in the outflow is the use of lasers.
Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is the latest technology in glaucoma lasers. The trabecular meshwork is the drainage channel for fluid leaving the eye. The SLT is a laser that targets the melanin granules within the cells of the trabecular meshwork, and thus facilitates fluid leaving the eye and hence lowering eye pressure.
The advantage of the SLT over previous lasers such as the argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) is that the SLT causes no thermal damage to the trabecular meshwork. As a result, the laser is repeatable and there is typically minimal pain during or after the procedure. It is also likely safer long term for the patient as well. Studies have shown that the SLT works just as well as the ALT in lowering eye pressure.
SLT has been shown to be effective as first line therapy for the treatment of glaucoma or as an addition to medication in controlling eye pressure.
