Presbyopia and Baby Boomers

Serving Orange County, California and Surrounding Communities

Human body is a marvelous piece of engineering. And none is as fascinating as the lens in the eye. The lens is formed in the eye while we are still in our mother’s womb. The lens keeps adding new material for the rest of the life. The human lens is a clear oval foot ball shape which can change shape as needed. In a normal young eye the image of anything we see is formed on the retina. Retina is an extension of the brain. The light energy has to stimulate this part of the brain so we can see. As the image distance changes it is important that the eye adjust for those changes. Presbyopia is the inability to change shape adequately to focus near objects. This usually starts in the 4th decade. So as the years go by there is difficulty in reading small print and than larger print and seeing computers or cell phone. It worsens progressively over the next twenty years till in the sixties even intermediate vision is lost; that is difficulty to see TV or speedometer. The good news for baby boomers and seniors is here. The dysfunctional lens can be exchanged with a biocompatible new lens which allows the eye to see far and near.

The new technology has evolved over the last five decades. The alignment of various fields of science has culminated in this new exciting technology which is a boon for baby boomers. This means if you are on a hiking trip you can pull out a map and read it without glasses. Or if you are a pilot you can still retain your licenses without worrying about seeing all those fancy dials.
