The NIDEK Laser For Los Angeles Laser Eye Surgery

The Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser was one of the more popular lasers for refractive surgery in use in the United States. Until recently, the Nidek EC-5000 was the only laser (of the most commonly utilized lasers) that did not have FDA approval for hyperopic (farsighted) treatment. As of October 2006, that changed when the FDA awarded approval for hyperopic and hyperopic astigmatism treatments (up to +5.00D sphere 2.0D cylinder).
FDA-approved Treatment Range
- -1 to -14D of myopia with or without astigmatism
- Up to +5D of hyperopia with or without astigmatism
Note: Surgeons can choose to go outside of these ranges if they feel it is suitable and in the best interest of the patient.
Advantages
- Can treat very high prescriptions of myopia
- Surgeon can set optical and transition zones individually for each patient
- There are no royalty fees due to the manufacturer, as with some other lasers, which makes it less expensive to perform procedures
- Has an eye-tracker to account for any eye movement during procedures

Disadvantages
- There are complications after some PRK treatments, such as glare and difficulty with night driving
- Some complications can occasionally occur after LASIK procedures, such as ghosting.
- Wavefront not available
- Pupil may need to be constricted with Pilocarpine.
- Tracker not as good as that of VISX
- It has a 5 mm optical zone, so is not appropriate for people with large pupils
