IntraLase vs. Microkeratome | Los Angeles Laser Eye Surgery

Serving Orange County In Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, And Surrounding Areas

In your research on LASIK, the latest laser technologies, the risks and complications, you've probably seen debate on which is the better instrument to create the flap - the IntraLase laser or the microkeratome. You probably also noticed that the answer is not as simple as one or the other, as there are advantages and disadvantages to both.

The IntraLase laser is a femtosecond laser, meaning that it's an infrared laser that uses extremely short pulses of light. A femtosecond is a quadrillionth of a second. Such fantastic brevity enables extraodinary precision. A femtosecond laser can create a flap in corneas which are too thin for a microkeratome, and does it by creating microscopic bubbles across the desired location for the flap, at the exact depth required. The flap is then easily lifted and an excimer laser is used to do the actual reshaping of the cornea.

To whom it may concern:

I had laser surgery on both eyes and am very pleased with the results. I can see very well compared with not having surgery. The pain of laser is very mild and goes away in 24 hours. This is my second experience with laser and am very pleased with the results. I am 72 years old and hope to pass my drivers license.

Sincerely, A. Anita

Advantages of the IntraLase Laser:

Arguments have been made that the IntraLase is more precise and produces better results, and some surveys and studies have supported this contention. But there's not enough data at this point to establish it firmly.

The two most important points to remember:

  1. LASIK is one of the safest surgeries performed and the rate of complications with either instrument is very small.
  2. The skill and experience of your surgeon are the key components to a successful outcome. Both the IntraLase and the microkeratome produce great results when a great surgeon is utilizing them.

At Khanna Institute, Dr. Khanna uses both the IntraLase laser and the microkeratome and has excellent results with both. Based on the results of your full eye examination, you and he will discuss which will be better for your LASIK procedure. If cost is a factor, you can inquire if the microkeratome will be suitable for your procedure as it is less expensive to use than the IntraLase laser.
