ALL LASER LASIK - IntraLase
Serving Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and Orange County, California
LASIK is an acronym for Laser Intrastromal Keratomileusis. It means the shape of cornea is changed to the desired one by applying the laser to below the surface. How does one reach below the surface? By fashioning a flap. This flap can be created by a microkeratome and more recently by a laser. Femtosecond lasers can create the flap and then excimer laser lasers can reshape the cornea. This is referred to as all-laser lasik. Another name is IntraLASIK.
The IntraLase Fs
The most advanced femtosecond laser used for all-laser LASIK is the IntraLase Fs. Dr. Khanna uses IntraLase FS laser in Beverly Hills, to design a custom-shaped flap. This is a 4th-generation laser. It is safer, better, and more advanced than the previous versions. If Dr. Khanna uses it you know it is FDA approved.
Femtosecond Lasers
IntraLase Fs Laser is a representative of the Femtosecond lasers. It uses tiny rapid pulses of light to fashion a corneal flap. The laser beam passes through the top layers of the Cornea to a predetermined position and depth in the stromal layer of the cornea. It does not penetrate the cornea or enter inside the eye. The IntraLase laser moves back and forth across the cornea to create a uniform layer of bubbles at the specific safest depth. The bubbles are thus formed in one plane of the corneal tissue. The tissue is gently separated to form the corneal flap. The corneal flap is then folded back for the application of the excimer laser. Needless to say the eye is numbed during this painless procedure.
Computer-Controlled, Blade-Free LASIK
The entire procedure is controlled by your surgeon and the computers of the laser. No blade ever comes into contact with your eye. Dr.Khanna is able to customize the flap to what’s best for your eye. He can fashion a unique flap by controlling the diameter, depth and angle of edges of the flap. This is an important advantage since everyone's eyes are shaped differently and the corneal thickness can vary from person to person. Customizing the flaps to your specific needs increase the safety and contributes to excellent postoperative outcomes. The corneal flap created with the IntraLase method also “locks” back into position after the LASIK procedure is performed. This is supposed to decrease the chances of flap slipping or other problems.
