Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)
Serving Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and Orange County, California
An Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) – also known as an “outpatient surgery center” or a “same-day surgery center” – is a specialized healthcare facility designed for surgeries that do not require an overnight hospital stay. The term “ambulatory” means that a person can walk in and out of the surgery center on the same day. Unlike hospitals, ASCs only deal with healthy people requiring surgery. High-risk patients are still operated on in a hospital setting.

The Benefits of a Certified ASC
In the past, cataract surgery and PRELEX surgery could only be performed in a hospital setting. This involved a lot of time wasted on the admission process, extensive testing, and staying in the hospital overnight.
With the introduction of modern microsurgical equipment, the surgical time for cataract and PRELEX surgery has been significantly reduced: it now takes only 10-20 minutes to complete. New techniques have also allowed cataract surgery to be performed under topical anesthesia, rather than general or local anesthesia. All of this has combined to make cataract surgery at an ASC not only possible, but vastly preferred.
Ambulatory surgery centers also have a more flexible pre-operative clearance process. Healthy patients who require PRELEX surgery can walk into their procedure without needing any blood tests or other examinations. However, if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or any other type of serious medical condition, you should consult with your primary doctor before surgery.
