Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)
Serving Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and Orange County, California
An Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) is the place where modern cataract surgery and PRELEX surgery are performed. Ambulatory denotes that patient can walk in and out of the surgery center. This center should be AAAHC or Medicare certified. The ASC houses the equipment needed for the surgery which includes the microscope, the phacoemulsification unit, the bed, and anesthetic and ancillary equipment.
In the past, cataract and PRELEX surgeries could only be performed in a hospital setting. The hospital setting meant a lot of time wasted for the patient in getting admitted, staying in the hospital, and undergoing extensive tests. Of, course all this cost a lot of money.
With the introduction of modern microsurgical equipment, the surgical time for cataract and PRELEX surgery has been reduced to only 10-20 minutes. Also, new techniques allowed the surgery to be more easily performed under topical rather than general or even local anesthesia. It was no longer necessary to keep patients in house. These changes made it unnecessary to keep cataract patients in-house following treatment.
ASCs, unlike hospitals, deal only with healthy people requiring surgery. High-risk patients are still operated in the hospital setting.
ASC is more flexible in requiring preoperative clearance. Healthy young individuals requiring PRELEX can walk into the surgery with no need of any blood or other tests. People with Diabetes, Hypertension, or any other disease will have to discuss with their doctor if any or which tests may be required.
Khanna Institute has its own AAAHC-certified ASC. Dr. Khanna also uses other certified surgery centers for patient convenience.
