Recent Approval

I thought this exciting news for people with bad vision.

FDA Approves Treatment for High Myopia With Astigmatism
Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. (Santa Ana, CA), has been granted FDA approval for its Star S4 IR excimer laser system with the Customvue procedure in the treatment of high myopia and myopic astigmatism. The procedure is indicated for decreasing or eliminating myopia and myopic astigmatism ranging from -6.00D to -11.00D with up to -3.00D of cylinder. According to a company press release, the approval establishes Customvue as the procedure with the highest treatment range of myopia and astigmatism. It has previously been approved for hyperopic patients and those with mixed astigmatism as well.According to results of clinical trials, 98.3% of patients with high myopia who were receiving the Customvue treatment achieved 20/40 BCVA or better at 6 months postoperatively, with 84.3% reaching 20/20 UCVA or better. "The expansion of the Customvue procedure for highly nearsighted and/or astigmatic individuals adds yet another level of safety, precision, and personalization to the laser vision correction procedure," stated a doctor who was involved in the clinical trials. "In this group of individuals, the improved quality of vision is particularly significant. Almost all individuals who are eligible for LASIK surgery can now be treated with the truly personalized approach of the Customvue procedure."During the next few weeks, Customvue procedures for high myopia will be supplied to practitioners who have completed the required training and certification process.

New Orleans

My cousin who is a Hospital Administrator in New Orleans, is safe in Texas. I was able to get thru to him on his cell. His house is under 10 feet of water, hospital is closed. The generosity of friends and family is helping him bear this difficult phase. A lot of our ophthalmology colleagues have also been displaced.

Yosemite

On a trip to Yosemite, California we saw bears, deer and giant redwoods.
Its amazing to see trees 2000 years old. Could humans live that long? Its also heartwarming to see that the native inhabitants have allowed these trees to prosper.
